In the early afternoon LTC Machera, CPT Coenen, and SFC Cabreza and I go in one of the cars to a memorial to German war dead from WWI which is toward “downtown” Tanga. We are also able to finally locate the Commonwealth Graves Commission memorial and mass burial site that was mentioned in the flier posted in the hotel. It is not far from the cemetery we visited last Sunday. At one time it had a gate with a keypad lock that required the code to enter, but the gate is gone and one can easily walk in to view the wall with the names of the Indian and British soldiers who died in the Battle of Tanga in November 1914. SFT Cabreza has managed to obtain permission from LTC Pope to assist one of the hotel clerks, Jane, by working her 16 cattle. LTC Machera approves the “add on” to the scope of work and suggests that we do it on Tuesday, or last day of this phase of the VETCAP.
